  • January 9, 1779 – The British troops meet a large Maratha army at Talegaon and are defeated. This shattered the prestige of the British so low that they had to enter into a humiliating Treaty of Wadgaon by which the British had to surrender all the territories acquired by the Company since 1773.

  • January 9, 1854 – Govind Vasudev Kanitkar, noted poem writier, novelist and translator, was born.

  • January 9, 1889 – Dr. Vrindavanlal Varma, famous Hindi writer and social reformer, was born in Jhansi.

  • January 9, 1915 – Mahatma Gandhi returned from South Africa in Bombay on January 9, 1915 so this day is also known as ‘Non-Resident Indian Day’ as it commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi.

  • January 9, 1916 – Ramkrishna Ramnarayan Ruia, great industrialist, was born.

  • January 9, 1918 – Harprasad Nanda, famous Industrialist, was born.

  • January 9, 1922 – Har Gobind Khurana, scientist of Biology, was born in India. In 1959, he produced a chemical called “Coenzymea”, which is essential for certain processes in the human body. He was awarded Nobel Prize for medicine in 1968 along with Marshall W. Nirenberg and Robert W. Halley.

  • January 9, 1927 – Birth of Sunderlal Bahuguna, Indian environmentalist.

  • January 9, 1934 – Mahendra Kapoor, born in Amritsaron on January 9, 1934, was an Indian playback singer. His repertoire extended to 2500 songs in various regional languages and died on September 27, 2008.

  • January 9, 1935 – Britain signed the Trade Pack with India.

  • January 9, 1965 – Farah Khan, born on 9 January 1965, is an Indian film director and choreographer.

  • January 9, 1971 – Muslim leader Sheik Mohammed Abdullah was barred from returning to Kashmir.

  • January 9, 1974 – Farhan Akhtar, born on 9 January 1974 in Mumbai to Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani, is an Indian film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, playback singer, lyricist and television host based in Bollywood.

  • January 9, 1997 – General Ershad, President of Bangladesh from 1982 to 1990, was in jail for corruption since 1991 and is freed on January 9, 1997.

  • January 9, 1998 – Three RJD ministers in the Gujral Cabinet, Mr. Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Capt. Jai Narayan Nishad and Mrs. Kanti Singh resigned.

  • January 9, 2001 – Shenzhou 2, an unmanned Chinese spacecraft is launched with a monkey, a dog and a rabbit was on board.

  • January 9, 2003 – Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, Established in 2003, is celebrated in India on January 9 each year to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of India. This day is also known as ‘Non-Resident Indian Day‘.

  • January 9, 2018 –  In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Shia Central Waqf Board chairman Wasim Rizvi has asked to ban Madrasa education across the country.
